Orthopedic Associates of Lake County treats all diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, which includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves.
Not all treatments require surgery.
You should know that orthopedic surgeons actually treat many musculoskeletal conditions without surgery, such as tendonitis, arthritis, strains and sprains. Instead prescribe medication, exercise and other rehabilitative or alternative therapies. In fact, most orthopaedic diseases and injuries require more than one form of treatment.
When surgery is required.
Some injuries automatically require surgery. Others may only require surgery after other therapies have failed. Our orthopedic surgeons perform a variety of surgeries. Common procedures include:
- Arthroscopy: a procedure using special cameras and equipment to visualize, diagnose and treat problems inside a joint (most often the knee or shoulder).
- Fusion: a process that joins together two bones using bone grafts and internal devices, such as metal rods, so that it heals into a single, immovable bone.
- Internal Fixation: the surgical insertion of a device (such as metal plates, pins or screws) to keep a bone in proper position while it is healing.
- Joint Replacement: (partial, total and reconstruction): when an arthritic or damaged joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint called a prosthesis.
- Joint Resurfacing: an alternative to total joint replacements for certain patients; this process can conserve natural bone by “capping” existing joints.
- Osteotomy: cutting and repositioning bone to correct a deformity.
- Soft tissue repair: mending soft tissue, such as torn tendons or ligaments.
- Trauma: Surgery to repair broken bones.
